Bad Hoax - Home (Room Recording 01.26): Song & Music Video Review
Vevna Forrow
Bad Hoax’s release, “Home (Room Recording 01.26),” reminds us of the importance of feeling at home. Home can be, at times, of course, another human being we love immensely, not always necessarily a physical place or location in time; the feeling of homesickness or missing someone can be a powerful, draining, and overwhelming feeling. Oftentimes, the ones we love are just one phone call away. The song emphasizes being uncomfortable, “feeling out of place,” wanting to leave, and wishing to be contacted by someone they care about; wanting to be alone with just them for one more night on Earth; waiting for their return; and trying to get back to the way things were..

Bad Hoax is an incredibly talented live electronic music duo from Australia that has released killer, energetic tracks such as “STATIC,” “Easier,” “Flesh,” and “All Night.” Out of all their releases, “STATIC,” “Cold,” and “Flesh” are absolutely my favorite music videos of theirs. I love “Cold,” how it’s much more story-driven from end to end, and involves downing cold jugs of milk, and it has a fun kiss thrown into the video. I think they have some of the sickest reels I’ve seen. Definitely check out the pop-up Spotify canvas reels on “Easier”, “Flesh - Radio Edit,” “Nothing,” and “All Night,” or take the time to hop into their YouTube or Instagram feed to view their video work.
I remember the first song I came into contact with of theirs was “STATIC” last year, and instantly became a fan. It’s a super catchy song.

While “Home” is not my all-time fave of theirs, nor do I believe it's their strongest single, I still love it as I can really relate to the lyrics in a sense of not feeling at home like you used to, or how moving can make you feel weird for a rather long time. Also, it would have been great to see perhaps an in-progress pending video call or a phone a bit more in the video itself. I predominantly love electronic songs you can dance to and get lost in, and “Home” appears to be more of a vocal-focused release with a somber tone throughout, a song I’d listen to more so in a down-in-the-dumps mood or when missing someone I care about. The best part of “Home” is the looped beats over “take me home, it’s so much better when we’re just all alone.” Again, it makes you think about what home means to you, where home is to you, or rather, who is home for you? I was also thinking back to one of my favorite movies as a kid, Clockstoppers (2002), while listening to the “time freeze” portion.
I would say their latest April release, “Not that Deep” (Car Recording 04.26), is also packed with hardcore beats across. Alexandra Nicholas’s vocals are always superb, and Will Stephenson’s composition is truly outstanding—the production and Bad Hoax’s striking visuals are impeccably executed every time. “STATIC” and “Flesh,” for instance, are 4.8 and 4.5 to me, if I had to rate them; nearly all of their earliest 2024 and 2025 releases are closer to 5 to me.
Memorable Lyrics:
"I just want to freeze time just for tonight
I just wanna FaceTime for tonight"
RATING: 4.2 OUT OF 5
