Year Ending by Sam Calhoun

Step out onto
the cold deck
twenty five
degrees not
cold enough
for the wrens
sheltered in
half dead ferns
one green sprig
reaching
for the door—
refill the feeders
let cold boards
kiss bare feet,
wanting to stick
wanting to stay
wait like the dark
waits, like owls wail
somewhere in
freezing fog
beyond the hedgerow
still green—
